K’Gari (Fraser Island) & The Capricorn Coast
K’gari, also known as Fraser Island, is the world’s largest sand island, spanning 1,840 square kilometres and stretching over 120 kilometres along Queensland’s coast. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it features unique ecosystems where ancient rainforests grow from nutrient-poor sand. The island holds over 100 freshwater lakes, including the perched Lake McKenzie and emerald-colored Lake Wabby. Its eastern beach—75 Mile Beach—serves as both a highway and airstrip, with popular sites like Eli Creek and the rusted Maheno shipwreck. K’gari is also home to one of the world’s purest dingo populations and over 350 bird species.
